Abel Trouvet, aged 19 years joined the newly created 10th division of the 52nd Regiment of Colonial Infantry which became part of the elite French Marine Corps. They fought at the battles of the Somme in 1916 and Aisne in 1917. It was during the early part of of 1918 that his Division formed part of the the defensive line including the fort at Toul, Verdun since 1914.The fort was virtually destroyed in the intervening years by large calibre (155mm) German canon. The main turret, however, survived and was used as an observation post by American troops to support their retaking of the salient at St. Mihiel later in the year.
Many thousands of soldiers from both sides died in the action around the woods between Marbotte and Louiville. Their sacrifice is commemorated in a window at the church pictured above.
